Dachshund: a digging and hunting dog
The dachshund is a dog breed from Germany. They appear in the German Basset Hound breed category. Dachshunds have a long body but runs around on short and stubby legs. This is why it''s also called a "sausage dog".
The name "dachshund" comes from the German "dachs" which literally means "badger dog". In fact, dachshunds were originally used for hunting badgers. The first dachshund appeared in the 17th century but the breed kept evolving until the 19th century. There are currently three types of dachshunds, classified by their coats, their size and their color. First of all, there is the long-haired dachshund, the short-haired dachshund and the wire-haired dachshund. Then, there''s the standard, miniature, and kaninchen (German for "little rabbit") dachshund. Thirdly, they can be single-colored, single-colored with spots ("merle") and single-colored with tan spots plus a pattern.
Dachshunds distinguish themselves through different character traits. They are funny, happy, playful and affectionate... But also very lazy. However, they can also be very observant and cunning. They are generally admired for their liveliness, endurance, courage, loyalty and their flexible character. But they are also criticized for being jealous, very possessive and stubborn.
As well as being a perfect companion, dachshunds are also commonly used for hunting deer, hares, boars, rabbits, badgers and even foxes. They are actually known for being excellent at digging and moving quickly.
