The Groenendael is a Belgian Shepherd dog. It first appeared at the start of the 20th century in the Brussels region. Its intelligence and vivacity made it a very good sheep dog and its nose is among one of the most developed of all canine breeds.

As farming activity became less common, this dog also found its place as a working dog, used for protection, as a police or guard dog… Today, as a result of the return of wolves to European mountain ranges, it is gradually taking its place once again as the guardian of flocks.

The Groenendael can measure up to 62 cm and weighs up to 30 kilos. Its coat is long and thick, especially around the neck, and its coat is always black.
