Dalmatian: the dog in black and white

The Dalmatian, known traditionally as a carriage dog, is a dog breed of medium build which stands out for its black or brown spotted white coat. They appeared around about the 12th century. The first images and descriptions of Dalmatians were published in 1792 in works by Thomas Berwick. The first Dalmatian standard was written in 1882 and made official in 1890.

Physically, Dalmatians set themselves apart with their muscular build, short and sleek hair, high-set tapering ears and well-defined spots and its slightly curled tail which never curls over the back. Even though its most famous colors are black and white, liver spotted coats are also officially recognized.

Dalmatians are lively and sporty dogs. They need regular exercise. They can''t be kept inside or on a leash. They need exercise and space for their well-being and development. In the city, they must be walked two to three times a day. Dalmatians often excel in many competitions and sports like the Canicross, Agility, Carriage and Musical Canine. Dalmatians have a calm and dignified character. An intelligent dog, they learn quickly and are easy to train. The Dalmatian can sometimes have a stubborn attitude and needs specific attention. A very affectionate dog, they need a lot of hugs.
