Rottweiler: the welcoming guard dog
The Rottweiler is a dog breed originally from Germany. Originally, the ancestor of the Rottweiler - called by their ancestral name of Watchdogs - were used to guard cattle which was to feed the Roman legion during their military campaigns. Etymologically, this breed is named after their ancestor who drove and protected cattle for the butchers in the town of Rottweiler in the Middle Ages. The Rottweiler - also called the German cattle dog - appeared towards the end of the 19th century, presented in an exhibition in 1892. They were officially recognized in the United Stated in the interwar period (1935), in England in 1966 and France in the 70s.
The Rottweiler is an average sized dog. They are 24 - 27 inches tall and weigh between 110 - 120 pounds. Physically, the Rottweiler is a solid, muscular and well-proportioned dog. They are covered with a dense and flat coat of medium length including an under-coat which doesn''t show through the over-coat.
Despite their robust appearance, Rottweilers are peaceful and loving dogs. They are docile and friendly towards children. Protective in nature, they are devoted to their master and family and will naturally guard them like a bodyguard. Rottweilers are not usually very suspicious. A very smart dog, they are first of all welcoming to strangers to better detect if they are dangerous or suspicious people.
