Saint Bernard: the search and rescue dog

Saint Bernards are very large alpine dogs. This breed became famous at the end of the 19th century through the monks who used them as guard and defense dogs. But mostly because they were used as search and rescue dogs in the mountains in Winter. In fact, Saint Bernards were used to find people who had disappeared in the mountains after an avalanche. This practice made it necessary for them to carry small barrels of brandy around their necks to warm up and revive the avalanche victims.

Saint Bernards are between 27 and 35 inches tall and weigh between 140 and 264 pounds. They can have short hair that''s thick and rough or long hair that''s wavy. The Saint Bernard''s hair acts like a coat, thicker around the neck and legs. Their coat is white with red or brown (mahogany brindle) marks. Their feet, neck, chest and tip of their tail are also white. Their medium-sized eyes are diamond shaped and their ears are large and floppy. Their high-set tail is long and relatively heavy which makes it hang low and turn up slightly at the end.

Saint Bernards are by nature ideal companions since they believe they are search and rescue dogs. They are only aggressive if they feel their master is threatened.
