Collie: England''s law upholding dog

Collies come from an ancient sheepdog breed. This is the long-haired Collie. This sable colored dog is very popular for its tricolored coat.

Collies are originally from Englans. They were discovered in the surroundings of Scotland and England towards the end of the 19th century. Collies became popular in 1860 by Queen Victoria who was a big fan. In 1881, her rein made it possible to write the first standards for the long-haired and short-haired Collie breed. They were then imported into Ireland and France.

Physically, Collies are easily recognized by their wedge shaped head and flat skull. Its dark brown medium-sized eyes are almond shaped. They are also set apart by their coat which could be three different colors. Collies can be sable and white, tricolore (or blue merle) and white.

Collies are intelligent dogs. Their affectionate and gentle character leaves them open to abuse and brutality, which they can''t handle. For this reason, they have to be well trained with a gentle hand. Collies make excellent companions but can also be guard dogs. They bond easily with their master but are suspicious of strangers. What''s more, as an active dog, they excel in races and Agility.
