Groenendael Belgian Shepherd
The Groenendael is a Belgian Shepherd dog. It first appeared at the start of the 20th century in the Brussels region. Its intelligence and vivacity made it a very good sheep dog and its nose is among one of the most developed of all canine breeds.
As farming activity became less common, this dog also found its place as a working dog, used for protection, as a police or guard dog… Today, as a result of the return of wolves to European mountain ranges, it is gradually taking its place once again as the guardian of flocks.
The Groenendael can measure up to 24'' and weighs up to 66 lbs. Its coat is long and thick, especially around the neck, and its coat is always black.
Groenendael Sheepdog: a companion and watch dog
The Groenendael Sheepdog is a sheepdog breed originally from Belgium. They appeared at the start of the 20th century thanks to two couples of black dogs. The Groenendael was one of the four original Belgium sheepdog breeds. It figures next to the Belgian Shepherd Dog (the most famous) from Tervueren and Laekenois.
The Groendael is a tall dog. The male is 24 - 26 inches tall, the female, 22 - 24. Their weight varies between 55 and 75 pounds. This dog breed generally distinguishes itself by its long and abundant hair, especially around their neck and thighs. The coat is solid black, with a few little white marks on the edge of their paws.
The Groendael is always alert and lively. They need regular exercise and sporting activities. They are also docile animals. True, they can have a nervous disposition, but they aren't aggressive. They are courageous and intelligent. These qualities have made them appreciated and highly valued dogs by lots of people. The Groendael can also boast of having the best nose in the canine universe. They are always in action which makes it excel in all specialties. What's more the Groendael proves to be a companion animal like no other.
